We were running away from Boko Haram, on our way to Maiduguri. They found us on the road, and that’s when they slaughtered my father in front of me. This was a terrible experience in my life. When they killed my father they took me and my younger sister, they flogged me every day. All over my body. If I said I wanted to go home it see my parents, they would flog us. Flog us, flog us, and flog us. Once a day we would get a meal of boiled sorghum mixed with sand. We stayed with Boko Haram for 5 years. The camp was on top of a mountain near the border with Chad; they had captured a village there and turned it into a camp. We were many and they locked us all in a room. I was so afraid. There was a fire and gunshots everywhere and then we were rescued. They told us to run, so I grabbed the hand of my sister and ran. I was so happy! Then they brought us here to Maiduguri to the IDP camp. They gave us clothes to wear. At this point Zainab became visibly upset: we asked to pause but she insisted we carry on. When I came back home I was so sick. I heard the TLC was going to open, but I was so sick I didn’t know what to do. It took me months to recover. Then I joined the TLC. Life with Boko Haram was a terrible experience for me. Life here is much better. I am doing crafts again like I did before the insurgency. My family is scattered. There are six of us. Some of us are in Cameroon with my paternal grandmother. We were all looking for each other. We tried to travel to my hometown of Pukha but the route was blocked by the military: they told us the area was full of land mines so we could not pass through there. So we had to go around to get to Maiduguri I still don’t know where my mom is: we have not seen her for two years now. Zainab has received treatment from Street Child psychosocial counsellors.
