Sunset in Maiduguri, Borno State’s capital city.
Nigeria was the highest security environment I’ve worked in to date. No getting out the car, no visiting the local shops, and if you aren’t in the field you’re behind a compound wall.
Maiduguri’s population has doubled from Nigerians fleeing the insurgency. Many earn their living from the city’s signature yellow tuktuks, normally bought on lease and providing the capital’s public transport.
Hawking as seen here is common, especially by children; the numbers living in poverty necessitate all family members to become “economically engaged” early on, so the work of the communities and NGO’s to help these people resettle and get some of their lives back to normalcy is going to be long term and essential.
