Lesotho - Katse Dam
The second highest dam on the continent, and the second longest curvature Dam, it took 2,320,00 cubic metres of concrete to hold the Malibamat’so River in place. Like Bulembu in Swaziland it’s host to its own weather system, creating beautiful mornings full of low clouds swirling around the hills that encase the river. There’s a lovely lodge here too, some of it made up of older houses that belonged to dam workers. The dam itself is a mixed success; it delivers 30 cubic metres a second to South Africa (water is one of Lesotho’s biggest exports) generating millions for the economy, but it’s also been vulnerable to corruption in its management and those displaced by its construction have not had success finding new lives and jobs.
